thefuns

From the Middle of Nowhere US of A, The Funs have set out to take back genuine expression. Jessee Rose Crane and Philip Jerome Lesicko play loud and hard, striking each note as if their lives depended on it. They’ll be the first to tell you, despite the name; The Funs are not a party-band. Born out of a period of desperation and self-destruction, The Funs were and are—a way through the dark.

Formed in 2009, the duo released their first LP, S/T, in 2013 to the acclaim of the wild-at-heart and the sweaty crowds of warehouses, basements and bars across this fine country. In the fall of 2014 dreams came true for the couple with the chance to open for the Breeders on a tour to the west coast.

While most aspiring bands are flocking to major metropolises, The Funs have retreated from stints in St. Louis and Chicago to set roots in small-town Illinois. Amongst the corn and camouflage, the band’s been able to avoid the trappings of city life and focus on honing their craft. And in an old funeral home they’re rehabbing, the songs off their forthcoming LP took shape.

My Survival is a record full of hope, commiseration and passion, laced with fuzz and thunder. The duo trades instrumental duties creating a variety in the songs that move from snarling, to haunting, to hypnotic and back. It’s what you might expect from two self-proclaimed loud, sensitive creatures who met as kids at an all-ages punk show and grew up on Sonic Youth and Neil Young. But it’s entirely their own. It’s of their urgency, their passion, their battles, their voice. A voice that these days is harder and harder to find and all the more important to hear.
