On June 17th, native New Yorker Julian Velard will release his New York City concept album aptly titled If You Don't Like It, You Can Leave. Today, American Songwriter is offering an exclusive stream of the new album one week in advance of it's release.
If You Don't Like It, You Can Leave is Velard's most sincere release to date, telling stories of excitement and heartbreak across the five boroughs; mimicking the familiar feeling of bonding with a stranger over your love/hate relationship with the city.
PopMatters premiered the album's first single and said "If LCD Soundsystem's 'New York, I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down' is the definitive sad-sack ballad about the Big Apple, then Julian Velard's 'New York, I Love It When You're Mean' is its optimistic counterweight." Writer Brice Ezell said "Call it sentimental, call it saccharine, but what Velard does exceptionally well is play music that's thoroughly fun and equally honest."
Julian was born and raised in NYC and If You Don’t Like It, You Can Leave is his paean to New York living. The album's concept is beautifully illustrated by the cover art, featuring 1950's Broadway star Gwen Verdon who starred in Damn Yankees, married Bob Fosse, and appeared in Woody Allen's film Alice earning her undeniable New York cred. The photograph of Verdon was shot for the historic LOOK Magazine and taken at the top of the iconic Look building located in the heart of Midtown.
If You Don’t Like It, You Can Leave pays additional homage to the city giving nods to heroes of the New York music scene. Velard flawlessly weaves the infamous melody from George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" into his song "That Old Manhattan" and caps off the record with a cover of “Where’s the Orchestra?” by the legendary Billy Joel.
Julian's versatility has earned him regular appearances on NPR, serving as the musical director for the new pilot Scott Simon’s Wonderful Town and guesting on the musical trivia show Ask Me Another with Ophira Eisenberg, who will be guesting at the album release show. See details on the show Below:
