This year Pygmalion Festival is celebrating its 10th year. It has grown from a small local event featuring a few rising national artists into one that is now considered part of the national festival circuit, and brings fans from all over the Midwest and beyond. The intimacy of an unassuming but vibrant college town, paired with affordable tickets and limited capacity venues makes for one of the more memorable and fan-friendly festivals in the world. The event, which now has two other festivals running simultaneously - Literary and a Handmade Craft Fair - takes place over 4 days including 2 days of outdoor stages in the heart of bustling Downtown Champaign.
Over more recent years Pygmalion has attracted the likes of Grizzly Bear, Janelle Monae, Explosions in the Sky, Dinosaur Jr., Best Coast, The Head And The Heart, Cut Copy, Major Lazer and dozens and dozens more. The full history of the festival lineups are here.
The festival was started in 2005 by The Nicodemus Agency, a booking company that both promotes shows in Champaign-Urbana and also represents artists such as Damien Jurado, Richard Buckner, Maserati, and more. The founder, Seth Fein, was born and raised in Urbana, IL, and attended both Parkland College and The University of Illinois, graduating with a B.A. in Rhetoric, before settling in with his wife, a professional photographer. Together, they've run the company and the festival since its founding. He had already been booking bands to local clubs and parties by the time he stopped performing with Headlights (Polyvinyl Records) when he became aware of the fact that one of the elements that was truly missing from the cultural landscape in his hometown was a great music festival to celebrate the long and important history of the scene, and to bring in top notch national talent to pair alongside the best of who is currently performing.
2014 will also see the 2nd year of the Pygmalion Lit Fest as well as The Made Fest. Both run concurrently to the music events taking place.
In its second year, the Pygmalion Literary Festival is proud to present an eclectic lineup of award-winning and acclaimed authors including Lambda Literary Award Winner, Richard Siken, NAACP Image Award Finalist, Jamaal May, and Jennifer Percy, author of the critically acclaimed Demon Camp, to name a few. This year's festival will also feature a reading by Peter Orner and Audrey Petty, whose work with the McSweeney's Voice of Witness Series has garnered national attention.
The Lit Fest will take place throughout the four day Pygmalion Festival in a variety of engaging and approachable venues throughout Champaign-Urbana. All events are free of charge for community members and festival goers alike.
The Made Fest
is now a two-day, curated marketplace featuring handmade and vintage sellers from across the nation. Taking place from late morning until early evening, and with a full bar serving refreshments all day, this unique twist on shopping will take place right outside of the festival gates, and is free and open to the public.
One of the major influences on Seth's vision of the music scene in his hometown was Josh Gottheil who passed away in 1989. While still in high school Gottheil began promoting shows at various C-U clubs and all-ages spaces - both national acts such as The Pixies, Throwing Muses and Billy Bragg along side champion local bands such as The Didjits and Titanic Love Affair.
"When I was a kid growing up in Urbana, I'd only get to hear about these shows coming to town through older brothers and cousins, and the name Josh Gottheil was just kind of everywhere," Fein remembers. "After he passed away, his name just became iconic and synonymous with hard work, and the kind of DIY ethos that I've been in to for my entire life. This year we'll be dedicating the 10th year of Pygmalion Festival to Josh with still-to-be announced events that will benefit The Josh Gottheil Memorial Fund for Lymphoma Research."
