Panic! at the Disco is currently on The Gospel Tour with Walk The Moon and Magic Man supporting, and on Friday July 25th they played Chicago's First Merit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island. I was luckily enough to have the chance to sit down and talk with up and coming artist Magic Man about their writing process, new album and time on the tour. Make sure to keep reading for my thoughts on the show, pictures and the interview!
First up on the lineup was Boston band Magic Man! Magic Man were some of the most down to Earth and funny group of people I've ever met and their music is so darn catchy. The band's music takes the best of synth-pop and mixes it with a massive vocal range, finesse, and precision. Their single "Paris" is a face paced upbeat song with lovesick lyrics that contradict the melody so beautifully. The emotions that transcend and endearing vocals is the secret to the song's success. When wrapping up the Gospel Tour, Magic Man will be heading on tour with Smallpools and Panama Wedding.
Next up on the lineup was Walk The Moon! Walk The Moon has been one of my favorite bands since 2010(ish) yet somehow this was the first time I have seen them live. Their infectious guitar riffs and sing-a-long choruses were perfect for live shows. The audience were completely enamored and blown away by Walk The Moon. Lead singer Nicholas Petricca's falsetto. Hot Dayum.
Finally up, on the lineup was Panic! at the Disco. With four vastly different albums under their belt, their latest album, 'Too Weird to Live, Too Rare To Die!" was absolutely remarkable. Lead singer Brendon Urie burst on stage sporting a shimmering gold jacket which was immediately followed by an uproar of cheers. Panic's set was heavy on new material with songs such as "Girls/Girls/Boys", "Casual Affair", "Nicotine", "Miss Jackson" and "Collar Full", yet also included their most notable "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" and "Nine in the Afternoon". Panic! also played many tunes off their debut, 'A Fever You Can't Sweat Out' from "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage", "Time to Dance", "But It’s Better If You Do", and my personal favorite "Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off".
The highlight of the entire show would have to Urie's cover of Queen's classic "Bohemian Rhapsody". As a die harder fan in my early youth, it was remarkable to witness what a true and brilliant vocal powerhouse he has become. From his youthful and animated early days, Urie has progressed and matured so much.
I cannot stress how amazing the show and tour is. If you don't believe me, ask the handful of girls who were taken away by security in tears and completley overwhelmed by their glorious amazingness. Please please please check out all the bands and get tickets to the show ASAP.
