Chicago Rapper Jahzel shares a grim, chilling narrative in the first video from his forthcoming album.
After releasing a drill-induced second single entitled "Who Is You," Northside Chicago rapper Jahzel premieres a grim, chilling visual for first single "Wake Up!" via FakeShoreDrive. The video focuses on two characters facing opposing realities, as one appears to be successful and the other is homeless. The backdrop, which is just as haunting as the choir on the Flawless Trackz-produced record, showcases what can happen when desperation meets opportunity.
Both "Who Is You" and "Wake Up!" will be featured on Jahzel's forthcoming album, The Wake Up, set to release early 2015 on The Black Key Collective. The rapper's vision for the project is to present a worldwide awakening on the complexities of growing up in the inner city of Chicago, while sharing his story of stepping away from stereotypical views of "ultra-violence" and "gun fights" associated with the city.
Jahzel's ability to vividly paint lyrical portraits parallel to his upbringing, along with unique marketing strategies, makes it almost impossible to overlook his dedication and message. It's safe to say the Chicago native will push inner city musical boundaries and shine a positive light on a negatively depicted youth culture.
Only a true Chicagoan can fully understand the city's hustle mentality - simultaneously holding down multiple jobs while going to school, taking care of our families, and being active in our communities, all while pursuing our dreams and goals. It's the Chicago way. Chicago-born musician Jahzel, eats, sleeps, and breaths that mentality: "We [Chicagoans} are hustlers in general; we get it done," he says proudly. "I am telling the story about Chicago that hasn't been told - that along with the bad things that are happening, there are plenty of positive things going on. This is the real story of Chicago and I think people can relate to it." Jahzel has always been a proud Chicagoan, and his most recent project, The Wake Up, is an ode to the city he holds dear.
