What happens at "Get Off The Couch"?
Sam Wahl hosts the 4 songwriters who are all literally on a couch (or as close as we can get) on the stage. One by one they are introduced and encouraged to "Get Off The Couch" by the audience. Each artist then plays two songs, stripped down to their acoustic bones, telling stories behind the songs etc. Once the round is complete, the same happens for a 2nd round, so each artist plays 4 songs... there may even be a collaboration or two!
After a short break, the second half of the show sees the featured artist return to the stage to do a FULL BAND headline set. After which we all mingle and drink beer.
HONEY & THE 45s (Headliner)
“Honey & the 45s combine the low-fi sonics of eighties punk, the gorgeous rolling cadences of seventies R&B, and the infectious hooks of sixties pop. As whip smart as the lyrics are, the music itself is even better.” – Robert Rodi, New City Music
Honey & the 45s is a Chicago based blues/rock band featuring two female front-women. Known for its soulful sound and jazzy undertones, the band was originally formed as an acoustic group by lead singer, songwriter and guitarist Kristina Cottone, and singer, violinist and saxophonist Kim Kozel. Honey & the 45s’ unique sound has evolved into a soulful rock ‘n’ roll band by adding lead guitarist Jon Gould, bassist Sean Tatum, and drummer Jarad Kleinstein.
“This five-piece is steered by the sweet-dripping vocals of Kristina Cottone and the on-the-one harmonies of violinist/saxophonist Kim Kozel. For a band that’s only been together for a few years, they sound like they’ve been mastering their craft and living their songs for a decade or two.” - Rob Ross, Pop Dose,
Honey & the 45s’ debut album, The Need, was released in September of 2012. Five of the tracks off The Need were remixed by Grammy-Award nominated engineer Fred Breitberg and ‘spun’ on over 100 radio stations nationwide.
“They have a way of making the genres of jazz, funk, and blues sound fresh and completely new, as if the band is introducing each style to their audience for the first time.” - Listen Here Reviews
In 2014, the band took home the award for best Blues/Jazz band at the Chicago Independent Music Awards, and went on to open on the main stage for Cold War Kids at the Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon in Chicago and Big Data in St. Louis. Honey & the 45s has been featured in print, on commercials, in press conferences and has performed at some of the most prestigious music festivals and venues in Chicago and the Midwest.
Honey’s album, MAD, was released in December of 2014 and has received critical acclaim. Honey & the 45s made its live National television debut in December 2014 on WGN.
“A stellar set of seven songs that seamlessly weaves genres like rock, soul, jazz and blues, ultimately telling the story of a passionate group that wants more than just success.” - Chicago at Night, by Jim Ryan
“It is quite difficult to not be entranced in the unreal qualities of Honey & the 45s. If they continue to produce even a percentage of the sound they achieved with Mad there is nothing that can hold this band back. I can’t think of a better record to kick off the year.” - Greg Shaw, Nanobot Rock Reviews

LEE KETCH (from Mooner)
Mooner plays power pop for the 21st century. Their relentless double guitar attack and deceptively simple songwriting bear aloft the joys and pains of love, television, politics, and other detritus of modern Midwestern life. The group has been featured on the airwaves via XRT and Fearless Radio, collaborated on compilations with Kimya Dawson and Andrew Jackson Jihad, and played to fans at Chicago venues like Lincoln Hall, The Hideout, Schubas and Cole’s as well as others across the Midwest. Mooner consists of singer/songwriter Lee Ketch, drummer Adam Bonich, guitarist John Gargiulo, bassist Taylor Briggs and keyboardist Steve Slagg. They will be releasing their debut album in 2015.
EMMI CHEN (from Billii)
Tough, dreamy, with a voice like whisky when you need it the most, she sings you a song that you want to drive off with, a song you want to take out for a beer and listen to all night.
In the spring of 2014, Billii was created by Emmi Chen as a platform to develop high quality works of art, whether it be through sound, motion, vision, touch, scent. Her desire is that these works will encourage others to keep moving forward, keep creating, keep living, and bring joy into everyday life.
Billii's first project was created with very talented, driven musicians at 5th Street Studios to bring you her first sound production- The EP, to be released in spring of 2015.
Jess McIntosh hails from Southeast Wisconsin and teaches fiddle at the Old Town School of Folk Music. She performs across genres as a solo artist and amongst friends. Currently she fiddles and sings with Americana trio, Big Sadie, and has frequented the stage with Fellow WI natives, Shane Leonard (Kalispell, Field Report) and Ben Lester (AA Bondy, S. Carey).
